Our Board

SUNIA Staff is proud to introduce the members of our board, who support us in our efforts to make SUNIA possible. All members of the board are former members of SUNIA Staff and as such, possess an in-depth understanding of our program and how it operates.

robyn varughese - Co-chair

Robin Varughese is an Ethics Coordinator for the Cross Cancer Institute’s Clinical Trials Unit and is completing her Masters of Counselling Psychology. Robin was on staff between 2006 and 2009. Robin enjoys watching the Edmonton Oilers, reading, attending concerts, theatre (particularly musical theatre), and travelling.

faiz-ali virji - co-chair

Faiz-Ali Virji is an associate lawyer at Field Law, practicing in the area of civil litigation, including contract and shareholder disputes, construction law and debt recovery. Faiz was on staff between 2009 and 2012. Faiz is an avid Oilers fan, and enjoys all 2 months of patio season in Edmonton.

harley morison - secretary

Harley Morison is a theatre artist and producer in Edmonton. He directs and writes with his company, Cardiac Theatre, and also works as an administrator with Theatre Network. He was on SUNIA staff from 2011-2014. Harley enjoys spending time in theatres (either seeing shows or making them), reading, and soaking up Edmonton's glorious summers.

akash khokhar - treasurer

Akash is a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. He was a member of SUNIA's staff from 2001-2005 and served on the Board, in multiple roles, from 2010-2014 and from 2017 to the present. When he isn't working or sleeping, Akash can be found searching for/eating tasty food.

claire eagle - director

Claire Eagle is a former management consultant and a current candidate for the Master of Public Administration program at the London School of Economics, focusing on public and economy policy. Additional work experience includes time spent with the UK Civil Service on electric vehicle policy and research for UNICEF in Uzbekistan on youth radicalization. Claire is a mediocre but passionate surfer and enjoys applying the hiking skills picked up at SUNIA to English country walks.

heather fitzsimmons frey - director

Heather Fitzsimmons Frey is an Assistant Professor in the MacEwan University Arts and Cultural Management department. Her research focuses on performance for/by/with young people in contemporary and historical perspective, and her publications range from theatre texts to girlhood studies to dance to drama in education to sociology. Heather joined SUNIA staff in 1991 and was Executive Director from 1995-1996. She has served on the Board before, in multiple roles, from 2000-2008. She lives in Toronto with her husband and four children, and her passions include hiking and eating delicious food.

Nancy Lambert is a family physician working in Whitehorse, Yukon. She was on SUNIA staff from 2003-2006. She enjoys hiking, climbing, paddling and photographing Canada's Northwest.

Arjun Gupta is a cardiology resident at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton. He was on staff between 2009-2011. He enjoys running, watching the Oilers and playing tennis.

Freia de Waal - Director

Freia de Waal is a third-year student at the University of Toronto. She was a SUNIA staff counsellor from 2016 to 2018. Freia is passionate about social justice and advocacy, environmentalism, photography, and art. She also enjoys hiking, travelling and any good veggie food!

Hassan Mulji - Director

Hassan Mulji is an incoming Associate with PwC Canada and is finishing his accounting degree at the University of Alberta. He was a member of SUNIA's staff from 2013 to 2015. Hassan loves to fill his spare time with both reading and running.

Leslie Weigl - Secretary

Leslie Weigl has worked as Global Education Program Coordinator at the University of Alberta since 2004. Her main focus is building global community at International House, a living and learning community for residents from Canada and over 40 different countries, and she specializes in global leadership development and multicultural team-building. This passion was ignited when she was on SUNIA staff from 1996-1999, and she has served on the Board in years past. Leslie loves to dance, do creative projects, and especially to leave the city for quiet time at the family farm with her partner and daughter.
